My name is Steven Kozak. I am 21 years old and originally from South Bend, IN. In 2013 I started my first semester at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. I come from a family that has always struggled with addiction. We had our issues but my mother, Ruth Eva Kozak, was by far the best heart, soul, and mind I have ever known and she kept us together, kept what was important in front of us, and would drop anything to help out our children; we were her world. ( And I am sorry for the length but my mother doesn't deserve to have her story summarized into a matter of sentences)
In August 2015, after a series of health isssues, it was discovered that my mom had an overactive heart. She went into surgery to recieve a Mitral Valve Repair. The surgery went as well as it could have and she made a recovery. On Thanksgiving night I received a phone call that my mom was being rushed to the hospital with extreme pain in her abdomen. After a day of being hooked up to a pain medication I.V. that had a hole in it and leaking the medicine all over the floor, doctors found a mass in my mom's large intestine. She was rushed into surgery immediately and a 2' section of her colon was removed. I was doing some side-work in Indianapolis and preparing for Final Exams when she was supposed tobe released and return home.
I made a surprise visit home to see her and take care of her; as during all of her previous hospital time, my father was constantly stealing her debit card and buying alcohol while she was unaware. I got home late at night and I knew she didn't feel the best. I rubbed her back (this was one thing that always gave her relief) and eventually walked her upstairs to bed. I woke up early the next morning for a glass of water and my mom was back on the couch saying she hadn't been able to get a minute of sleep. I told her she should have woken me up but that's just what kind of person she was. She never wanted to burden others. So I sat with her again and rubbed her back until she urged me to get back to my girlfriend who was still asleep downstairs. Reluctantly, I went and left her saying how much I loved her. An hour later I awoke to my dad screaming, "Call 911, Mom isn't breathing!" I ran upstairs as fast as I could and started CPR while my girlfriend Mary called 911. She passed away that day (12/06/2015), at only 55 years old.
After that day my family began to fall apart. One week later I had to call 911 again as I walked into my father overdosing on the same couch that my mother died on. Since then he has been in countless treatment facilities, tried to commit suicide a handfull of times, recieved his 5th DUI, been in and out of jail, and kicked my out of his life with an hour to pack my belongings before he called the cops. He signed my sister Rosemary Andrews over as an Unlimited Power of Attorney. She since has taken control of my mom's $125,000 Life Insurance Policy and cut me out of her life and convinced all of my aunts and uncles to do the same. She even went as far as to have all of my belongins packed up and thrown into the garage, and shutting off the water so I had to brush my teeth at the local McDonald's. (I had been living there for over 14 years, she hadn't lived there for the last 2 as she found herself a new family) I ended up having to forfeit my Internship at one of the largest General Contracting companies in the Schaumburg, IL area (Builtech Construction Inc.) because I didn't have enough money to move there.
I am currently working at a Dick's Sporting Goods in Lafayette, IN and taking care of my mom's dogs Oliver and Chewy (shih-tzu and shih-tzu/pomeranian mix) However, now that I am forced to pay for my own schooling, car, car insurance, health insurance, medical bills, dog and vet bills, rent and everything that comes with it, I am completely overwhelmed with no sign of relief. Oliver was recently attacked by a Boxer mix at our local dog park. Last week, I was assaulted by my very own neighbors and had to get stiches, and today I owed last and next month's rent in the amount of $720. That has gone unpaid along with my car payment and car insurance as my bank account is currently at $38, and I have $2 cash. I recently recieved a e-mail noting that I have reached my cap for Federal Loans and come 8/22/2016 I need to start paying back the $40,000 I have recieved thus far.
I have applied for food stamps to no avail as even my three roommates won't even work with me and get me the information that Social Services needs to complete the application. I feel like I am drowning and I don't know what else to do as my entire family has left me on my own with no chance of reconciliation or communication.
If you make a donation of any size, the entirety of my heart goes out to you. The only thing I want to do in this world is to be half the person that my mother, Ruth Eva Kozak, was. And know that when I get through this black cloud of overwhelming despair, I plan on dedicating the majority of my life helping families in need. I want to help the mothers that are struggling to provide for their children, I want to show people how much damage alcohol and pharmacutical dependency can cause, and that with TRUE love, compassion and hard work, ANYTHING is possible. But I can only do that with your help. If I only raise $10 with this campaign, that's one more meal that I don't have to worry about.
No donation is too small and no donation will go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for your time as that means just as much as anything else. And thank you for your donation in advance.
Have a blessed day full of love and happiness, for life is too short to have anything but.Help spread the word!
